Firm History

The legal needs of financial institutions, lenders, and the business community have never been greater. The evolution of federal and state laws and regulations governing the financial industry and business in general, including commercial codes and consumer protection laws, have created a complex business environment and real demand for legal compliance and assistance. To meet growing legal responsibilities, experienced counsel are essential for businesses and lenders to minimize legal risks, promote organizational goals, and maximize earnings.

In 1974, Elmer Morgan and David Pottinger merged their successful law practices to form Morgan & Pottinger, bringing together services focused on the business needs of financial institutions, banks, and automobile dealerships, and the enforcement of creditors’ rights. Through the new partnership, the lawyers of Morgan & Pottinger pursued the goal of being a leading provider of efficient and high quality legal services.

In 1979, M&P acquired the historic building at 601 West Main Street in Louisville, Kentucky. With its cast iron façade from the 1870’s, the building is an anchor of the revitalized Main Street corridor. Neighbors include the Kentucky Center, the Humana Building, the Louisville Slugger Museum, National City Tower, the Louisville Science Center, the Frazier International History Museum, the Muhammad Ali Center, and, in the near future, Museum Plaza.

M&P’s two primary offices are strategically located in Louisville, the center of commerce and finance for Kentucky and the surrounding region, and in Lexington, internationally renowned for its thoroughbred industry.

Through expertise and an emphasis on outstanding client service, Morgan & Pottinger has become one of the premier Kentucky-based law firms. We are dedicated to providing our clients quality legal advice and counsel, and there are few firms that can provide such focused experience.
